The Connection between Idolatry and False Prophetic Words

Idolatry and False Prophetic Words

Do you know how to identify the idolatry in your life?

Most people think they are not involved in idolatry because they don’t have statues or images that they pray to.  However, God is very much concerned with the idols in our heart.

Here are some questions you can ask yourself to identify if idolatry exists in you.

What is the first thing I think about in the morning?

What occupies most of my thoughts throughout the day?

What is the last thing I think about at night?

What do I pray about the most?

If you can answer these questions truthfully to yourself you will identify the idol.

Your desires can become idols.  Do you want to get married?  Do you want to have a baby?  Negative thoughts about someone who hurt you years ago?  Are you constantly worried about the safety of your family?  Healing?  Financial Breakthrough? Ministry work?  Yes, obsessing about the growth of your ministry and the ministry work is not the same as worshiping God and staying focused on Him.

Each of these in and of itself is not bad a thing.  These are things that God wants you to have.  However they become idols when our thought life becomes consumed by them.  If you are spending hours in your day wondering when your boyfriend is going to marry you and this has been going on for years…it’s an idol.

God is not going to reward the idolatry by giving you the idol.

There is a link between idolatry and false prophetic words

When you have an the idol on the throne of your heart and you go to someone who is new to operating in the gift of prophecy, they may not realize as they are prophesying that what they are seeing in the spirit is actually your idol.

Let’s say that you have a desire to be married.  The prophet looks at you and says you are going to get married soon.  The problem is that this is the idol that they are looking at.  So they are prophesying your idol back to you.  Then you get excited because this marriage is coming.  Somehow the prophet missed that you are living in sin.  Somehow the prophet missed that you are involved in illegal activity and need to clean up your life.  He/She only sees the marriage.  This cannot be God because God is not going to give you the idol.  And, He is not going to reward you when you have these kinds of sins in your life.  He would tell you to clean up the sin first.

When 1 year goes by, 2, 3, 4, 5 now you are in the place of hope deferred and you are angry with God because the marriage never happened and that person is now with someone else.  The truth is God never said anything.

Remember the 1st commandment “you shall have no other gods except Me”

The thing or person that takes the first fruit of your mind, heart, soul and body and what you reflect on all day long is your god.

Is God your God?

Our goal must be to have God on the throne of our hearts so when people flowing in the prophet look at us all they see is Jesus!  All they can see is love.  Joy.  Depth of the knowledge of Christ.  That is what they should see.  You shouldn’t be that easy to “read” because you should be so hidden in Christ that only another person of depth can “see” you.

Ezekiel 14 The Message (MSG)

Idols in Their Hearts

14 1-5 Some of the leaders of Israel approached me and sat down with me. God’s Message came to me: “Son of Man, these people have installed idols in their hearts. They have embraced the wickedness that will ruin them. Why should I even bother with their prayers? Therefore tell them, ‘The Message of God, the Master: All in Israel who install idols in their hearts and embrace the wickedness that will ruin them and still have the gall to come to a prophet, be on notice: I, God, will step in and personally answer them as they come dragging along their mob of idols. I am ready to go to work on the hearts of the house of Israel, all of whom have left me for their idols.’

6-8 “Therefore, say to the house of Israel: ‘God, the Master, says, Repent! Turn your backs on your no-god idols. Turn your backs on all your outrageous obscenities. To every last person from the house of Israel, including any of the resident aliens who live in Israel—all who turn their backs on me and embrace idols, who install the wickedness that will ruin them at the center of their lives and then have the gall to go to the prophet to ask me questions—I, God, will step in and give the answer myself. I’ll oppose those people to their faces, make an example of them—a warning lesson—and get rid of them so you will realize that I am God.

9-11 “‘If a prophet is deceived and tells these idolaters the lies they want to hear, I, God, get blamed for those lies. He won’t get by with it. I’ll grab him by the scruff of the neck and get him out of there. They’ll be equally guilty, the prophet and the one who goes to the prophet, so that the house of Israel will never again wander off my paths and make themselves filthy in their rebellions, but will rather be my people, just as I am their God. Decree of God, the Master.’”

Idolatry and False Prophetic WordsHow do you remove the idol from your heart?

Again your desires are not evil (unless the bible says they are) so praying for a spouse or for healing is ok.  What I am saying is, do not let it consume you to the point that you can’t move on with your life. You can pray about it once per day.  After that, you need to pay attention to your thought life.  The minute your thoughts drift back to the idol you need to take the thought captive and put it under subjection to God’s word.

So when you get up in the morning, pray for your desire and leave that with God.  If the thought enters your mind again,  your first response is “I’ve already prayed for that” so you immediately shift your mind into something else.  Pray about something else.  Turn on some praise music and start praising God.  When you learn to master this technique you will notice very quickly that you don’t think about it anymore.  The first few days are the hardest but if you stay diligent with taking control of your thought life it will stop.

Stop sowing seeds into ministries that feed the idol.  Stop watching Christian TV that speak to your idol.  Change the channel and watch something else.  Your goal is to shift this thing from your heart so you should avoid feeding it.

Don’t be surprised if you receive breakthrough in that area because this is no longer your focus.

Repent for the idolatry.  Evict the idol from the throne of your heart. Put God back on His throne in your heart.

Here is a prayer for idolatry:

Father God, I repent for putting ___________, _________, before You.  Forgive me for not trusting your timing and your perfect will for my life.  God show me how to gird up the loins of my mind and stop obsessing over _______________, __________, I put my entire will into removing _______, _________, from the throne of my heart.  I evict them and ask You to take Your place on the throne of my heart, mind, soul and body.  Give me Your strategy to stay free from any practice of idolatry.  Guide me each day,  Cleanse me in the blood of Jesus and free from this bondage.  I trust You.  I trust Your plan and I want your perfect will to be manifested in my life, in Jesus Name, Amen
