How to Test the spirit behind a prophetic word and Why some don’t come to pass

I’ve wanted to write this for quite some time now because I’ve been asked about it and I want to shine some light on how to test the spirit and why some prophetic words don’t come to pass.

How to receive a prophetic word

Well, first thing you need to do is pray about the word and get a confirmation from the Lord that the word is actually:

(a) from Him;

(b) it’s for you;

(c) it lines up with the scriptures;

(d) what is the spirit behind the word (having the gift of discerning spirits helps here)

That means when you hear the word, it needs your prayers before you can even receive it.  And you want to go to the Lord and ask “Is this word from You?”  If He says “No”, you need to move on.

If He says “Yes” then you need to know “Is it for me?”  Many times we hear a word and it sounds good so we want it, not realizing it wasn’t meant for us, it was for someone else.  As an example, you hear a prophetic word that says “Pack your bags you’re moving” and you are ready to leave your job because you don’t like your boss so you receive that and run with it.  The problem is that you have some character flaws and God is using that job to work that out of you.  So, running away is going against the will of God.  Therefore, not because the word makes you feel good means it’s for you.  You need to pray and ask God every time.  Sometimes it is for you but your timing might be off so asking God for the timeline is something you need to also do.

If a prophetic word is from the Lord, it will line up with scripture.  If it doesn’t line up with scripture, it’s not from the Lord.  Period.  The end.  God will never tell you to divorce your spouse because you married the wrong person while you are now eyeing your “kingdom spouse” that just started attending your church.  Show me the scripture that backs up this concept.  It’s not God because it doesn’t line up with the word.

1 John 4:1-3

Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. ² This is how you can recognize the Spirit of God: Every spirit that acknowledges that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God, ³ but every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming and even now is already in the world.

The spirit of the antichrist.

Anti – against, opposed, preventing, suppressing, reversing, undoing, opposite of, acting as a rival, unlike 

The scripture says it is already in the world.  When we think antichrist we are generally thinking of one person.  This verse is telling us that a person can be operating under a spirit of the antichrist, meaning it can be more than one person on any given day.

Testing the spirit behind the prophetic word means that you need to discern what spirit is delivering the word.  Does the spirit oppose Christ?  Yes or No.  Is it going against what Christ said?  Is it suppressing the spirit of God?  Is it reversing the work that the Lord has done in you?  Is it speaking opposite of what God has said?  Is it acting as a rival/competing with God’s word?  Is it dethrone Christ from your heart and placing you on the throne instead?  If that profit continuously pulls you away from the Lord and causes you to focus on someone or something else…antichrist.  Because it is an idol.  If the profit continuously causes you to focus more on your past and getting revenge on your enemies and that is all they talk about…antichrist.  Because it’s an idol.

This thing is DEEP.

If they are always pulling your attention away from Christ (opposite) to focus it on something else, it is the spirit of the antichrist.  I don’t care how much you want what they are peddling for profit.

If you understand the Character and Attributes of God, you would know that He is multi faceted.  If they are truly hearing from God, it’s not going to be the same message all the time.  It can’t be.  You are not going to get blessed everyday.  There is a side of God that is judgement too.  So if there is never a rebuke, no correction, no focus on the Lord, you need to question what is the spirit that person is carrying.  Likewise, if every message is about judgement and there’s nothing uplifting or restorative about the message they just deliver you into a pit and leave you there.  Nah!  Some people are just hateful.

Don’t you know the enemy quoted scripture to Jesus?  That means there can be scripture used in the prophetic word, and it is still not from God.  The enemy knows information too so they can tell you all about your past doesn’t mean God sent them.  There are monitoring spirits that have been watching you ever since you were conceived in your mother’s womb.  They know stuff about you.  So just because someone said something and it’s true doesn’t mean it’s from God.  As an example, there is a food shortage crisis coming, there are wars that are also coming but you can have 4 different prophetic voices tell you the same thing and one is from God while,  the other is a person speaking from the spirit of fear,  the third is a parrot they just hear what other prophetic voices are saying and repeat it, and the 4th is a headline news prophet – they can only tell you after it happens and never before because they read it somewhere.

Discern, discern, discern the spirit behind the word.  Because the last thing you want to do is receive a word from someone who brought it from a spirit that is not God, even if it’s true!  You must pray in order to know this.

Receiving a prophetic word without praying about it is risky business.

Why some prophetic words don’t come to pass?

Free Will.

Years ago the Lord told me to do something and when I did it did not turn out the way I expected.  It went horribly wrong.  I thought for years about this and it bothered me so much because I couldn’t understand why it ended up the way that it did.  In the back of my mind that period of my life looked like this.

Do you have any part of your life that to this day you look back at it and think, I don’t understand.  Well, one day God asked me to do something and because I feared the same thing happening a second time I said to the Lord something to the effect of “when I did this the last time YOU did this to me”.  The Lord immediately told me “I didn’t do that to you, that person did that to you”.  I was in shock because quite frankly I somehow thought that if God said something would happen, then that means it will happen exactly as I saw it….regardless of other people.  This is not true.  You see God will never override our free will.  He can tell you to do something but you still have the option to CHOOSE to do what He said you are to do.  That means that a person can use their FREE WILL and change how the word will play out.  I know, Yikes!

It looks like this, YES, for sure God confirmed that you were to marry that woman.  No, God did not make her cheat on you. She CHOSE to do that.  So when your marriage fell apart and you start questioning if you really heard from God when He said to marry her, He did say that! But in your mind you never conceived that it would end in divorce.  But….Free Will.

So you could sit around for years questioning if you can really heard God or not and have fear associated with stepping out not realizing that YOU DID HEAR GOD.  God didn’t do that to you.

The other terms we use to blame God is this “But God allowed it”.  Sure!  What did you think He was going to do?  Puppet master everyone into eternity?  Or did you want the heavenly fist to come down from above and clobber them?  If that were the case, there would be no humans left on earth because at some point, we’re all going to use our free will to do something that is not His will.

When He told you to get up and workout but you’re still sitting there eating potato chips, is He allowing that too? God is not “allowing” you to get fat.  You have free will.  That statement >>>But God allowed it<<<<<< is still blaming God for our free will.  And believe me when I tell you, you will never trust God, if you blame God.  Would you trust someone that you think just sets you up to hurt you? No.  You need to see how critical this is to how you walk in faith, hope and trust.

Now, after the Lord said this to me, it certainly sent me into a tailspin.  Because how to do I move forward with this knowledge?

First thing you need to know is that whenever a prophetic word has other people involved in it coming to pass, you need to make accommodations in your mind that the person has free will.  If God did not puppeteer them, you can’t puppeteer them either. This is how people get into witchcraft, trying to manipulate and control people into doing what they want. That means that it is impossible for you to live a successful Christian life without forgiveness. Otherwise, you are going to be stuck.  You need to be able to forgive and move on.  Cling for dear life to this scripture..

Romans 8:28

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

It is going to work out.  If not with them, then somebody else.  You’re always going to win in the end.  You need to be able to forgive, offload the trauma and move on.  Otherwise, you’ll take your bad experiences from the past and destroy the beautiful things God has in store for your future.

But what if it happens again with the next person?

Matthew 18:21-22

²¹ Then Peter came to him and asked, “Lord, how often should I forgive someone who sins against me? Seven times?”

²² “No, not seven times,” Jesus replied, “but seventy times seven!

I know you always relate this to the same person offending you, but accept is as a lifestyle of forgiveness.  If the next person does the same thing to you, forgive them, release the trauma and move on.

It’s going to be the same response each and every time.  There’s never a moment when this is not true.  Of course, if you find that you keep falling into the same hole, it’s time for you to look within, check your discernment and your selection process.  Why do you keep picking the same people?  What kind of spirit is attached to you so that you are always attracting that?  Seriously.

I don’t want you to think that your life then hangs in the balance because of someone else’s free will.  No, God is still able to get you where you need to be.  He’ll use someone else to do it.

After learning this truth, several years ago He showed me through a series of visions, dreams and scripture something else that would happen.  I was very hopeful it would happen.  Well, after years passed I began to question what was going on there.   I wasn’t questioning what He said, I was questioning what was holding up the process.  I remember saying to the Lord “what is happening here?  I was sure it would’ve happened already based on what You were showing me”.  He looked at me with the most loving eyes and said “You’re going to need to forgive them.”  Man oh man!  You know what that means, right?  They’re not going to do it.

Sigh.

What am I going to do?  Sit here and be mad about it?  No.  I forgive them for not following through and I move on.

I will never speak one word of it to them or anyone else for that matter.  I’m going to let them enjoy their plausible deniability.  Cause you know when no one else knows.,,,they can pretend like it doesn’t even exist. However, they know what God told them to do, I know what God told them to do and God knows what He told them to do.

And then this gives me the opportunity to pray double for my trouble (Job 42:5), seven times as much for stealing my time/wasting my time/stealing my money/wasting my energy.  You name it!  Whatever was taken over that time period, CALL IT BACK SEVENFOLD!!!   (Proverbs 6:30-31)

You’re. Still. Winning!  

You just need to know how to pray. We don’t wine, complain, get upset. No.  It’s a simple prayer.

Prayer:  Lord, only You know what happened here.  I forgive them and I release them from all obligations and I bless them and all the members of their household.  Thank you that I can trust You will give me double for my trouble.  Thank you that all of the years that I spent wasted waiting for their obedience, You will repay it seven fold.  Every dollar that I spent investing in this, you will repay it sevenfold.  Everything that was lost, I trust You to repay sevenfold and I receive it now in Jesus name, Amen.

My double or my sevenfold does not come from them.  I forgive and I release them, they are free to go.  GOD is the one who repays me because He is the only one that knows what happened there.

Sometimes we can make revenge an idol, we keep watching to see how God is going to deal with the people who hurt us.  Guess what? If you keep looking behind to see how God is going to deal with them, who’s watching the road?  You’re about to crash.  When I say release them, I mean release them, even from the consequences of what they did.  THAT is true forgiveness.

Deuteronomy 30:3

“God, your God, will restore everything you lost; He’ll have compassion on you; He’ll come back and pick up the pieces from all the places where you were scattered.”

There are no wasted years!  All of it is a learning experience and you just keep getting better and better.

Lack of Obedience.

While free will can mess with your prophetic word, willful disobedience is a whole other issue.

You know, again, I used to believe when a prophetic word went forth it was going to happen no matter what.  Until I met way too many people that literally hindered their own prophetic word by their disobedience.

When He decides to bless you, give you a mantle, hand you prophetic gifts and anointings, put is perfect will over your life and show you clearly what it is, you should be honored!!!  You should be so privileged that HE decided to take notice of you and use you in His plan for humanity.

But, don’t get it twisted!  He’s not going to give you what He promised if you can’t follow basic instructions

He said go left, you go right. He said stop hanging out with these people, you’re still hanging out with them.  He said move, you stay.  He said stay, you move

I can generally tell after a few months of observing someone’s behavior whether or not they will get what the Lord prophesied over them.  I just see how well they obey.  There’s obedience when everything is great in your life and then there’s obedience when things are not going your way

….but you still do what God told you to do

….you still act the way the Lord told you to act

….you still said what He wanted you to say even though you didn’t want to and you may end up losing something.

….you still followed through and did what God said even though the other person didn’t

…you still did it even though you were afraid

….you still did it even though you had no idea if it would work out just because God said it.

….you still did it, even though you didn’t want to BUT the Bible says…

These types of Christians are the ones who will see the PERFECT WILL of God happen in their lives and the prophetic word will happen for them, even if God has to switch out a few people who used their free will to mess them up.  God will still fulfill His will to His obedience servant

Isaiah 1:19

“If you are willing and obedient, You will eat the best of the land;”

I can’t help but think that Samson’s life would be so much better if he just didn’t drink like God told him not to, didn’t marry someone who God said no to, his disobedience led him to a painful and horrible life.  I don’t think that this was God’s perfect plan for him and he was willfully disobedient.

So, the Lord gave me a series of visions and dreams, backed them up with the word that I would be working with this couple in the future.  I didn’t know these people so when through a series of events I got to know them, all these visions and dreams came flooding back to me.   I went through my journal and found all of them and knew that I was in the season for these things to happen.

Guess what?  They got a divorce.

Sigh.

I had to go through my journal find every instance that was related to them and…

None of those dreams and visions are going to happen.  Based on the disobedience of this man or woman -only God knows who is at fault- that whole section of prophetic visions and dreams won’t happen.

It’s done!  They are no longer together so it cannot happen the way God showed it to me.

Your disobedience, can change someone else’s prophetic word.

This is something that I believe people don’t realize.  Prophetic words can changed based on free will and disobedience/obedience.

2 Chronicles 7:14 says “IF my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.”   It says IF, if, if.  That means obedience is necessary for it to happen.  If they disobey the land doesn’t get healed.  It’s that simple.

When you get a prophetic word, check to see if there are conditions associated with it.  Because if you don’t do your part, it may never happen.

There is a possibility that the prophetic word you are holding on to can change.

If it’s just between you and God and He’s asking you to be obedient in an area to receive it, you have to do it or it won’t happen.

Brothers and sisters, it took me years to learn this.  And as I go along in life, I release certain prophecies because I realized they are not going to happen.

And, even the ones that are still valid, may not happen exactly the way that I saw them in a vision or dream.  They can change.  Especially the ones that involve other people, those are a moving target.

This is why each year when we do our fast, when I do the dream interpretations I tell people not to send me any dreams that happened before the fast.  Why?  It may have changed.  If God wants to reconfirm, He’ll bring it back.

Here’a what you need to do:

1. Take out all those old dreams and visions and look through them.  If you know for a fact that some of the people involve are no longer in your life, you need to put that to the side.  It doesn’t mean God won’t fulfill His promise to you, it just means it’s not going to happen the way you saw it.
2. Bring it before the Lord and ask Him to give you a new vision or dream concerning that.  This is the new plan.  He may also tell you it’s not going to happen.
3. Do not despair, ask for a new vision or plan.

Say you had visions and dreams 15 years ago and you kept seeing that you were walking with twins.  You were convinced you are going to have twins.  Then 10 years ago you start to notice that you are no longer seeing twins, instead there’s a little girl. And this is who you’re now seeing. What do you think happened?  Free will and/or disobedience.

David was always going to marry Bathsheba, because she’s Solomon’s mother.  However, God did not “allow” him to have an affair with her.  No, the both of them did that!  Hence, they had to pay the consequence for the sin by losing their first child.

God is not just going to roll out His blessings when we do things like this.  There’s going to be a price attached to your willful disobedience.  Because she’s Solomon’s mother, her husband was going to be removed from the picture at some point without David’s “helping hand.”

David, was always going to be the King of Israel and Judah, but the people couldn’t wait so they demanded a King and ended up with Saul.  Then they had to suffer as a result of it, David had to suffer too before he could step into the role.  That idolatry bit them.

Abraham was supposed to have a child with Sarah, they didn’t believe it and so now we have to deal with Ishmael’s generation.  There is a price for the disobedience.  And sometimes the price can go on for decades!  We’re STILL paying for that one.

You know when God told me to store up food and some supplies for the coming hardship and war I said to him how much?  He told me and then once I did it I asked Him if I had enough. He said “Yes, you can stop now but check in with Me again in a few months”.  Why?  It’s a moving target!  What’s going on right now is like a chess match.  You move here, I move there, you do this, I do this.  Uh Oh, I wasn’t expecting them to do that, now I need to do this instead.  Wow!  I didn’t see that coming, ok we need to do this now.  Oh lookey lookey here, we may not need to do anything after all, let’s just let the Houthis do it for us!  Back up the subs quickly before they see us.  Oh we were with you all along, we were always your allies (plausible deniability). Yeah, sure.

It keeps changing and there are too many variables.  And everyone wants to come out smelling like roses so they have to control the information and not do anything that would make them look like the bad guy.

That means, this could start tomorrow, over the summer, at the end of the year.  And how long will it last?  Who knows?  What I have now is enough for what is in the realm of the spirit now BUT with one move of the FREE WILL of man the whole thing could drag on for much longer.  And there’s still a part of me that prays that the CHURCH will repent so we can shift it for good.

It is a moving target.

I’m hoping that this will help you figure out why some things didn’t happen as you thought they would based on the prophecies you received, your dreams and visions.  If someone else is responsible for why it didn’t happen, God will repay you what was lost. If it was because of your disobedience, all you have to do is repent and God will set it back in play or He’ll give you a new dream or plan.

Jeremiah 33:2-3

^2-3 “This is God’s Message, the God who made earth, made it livable and lasting, known everywhere as God:‘Call to me and I will answer you. I’ll tell you marvelous and wondrous things that you could never figure out on your own.’
