What Does It Mean to Have Your Identity in Christ?
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
When you received Christ as your Savior, your old life was washed away in His blood and you became brand new, like a newborn baby. This is the born again believer in Christ which simply means you get to start over. You no longer have to carry all the old things. Your past no longer defines you.
We are not to lie and pretend like it never happened but instead recognize that it is part of an old identity and now we get to live a life free from that sin.
As a result, we need know and recognize how our new life and new identity in Christ should appear.
The bible tells us that by “their fruits” you shall know them so if there is no change within us that says we are new creations in Christ it means the new identity is not yet formed.
Who You are in Christ
1 Peter 2:9
But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.
Where you are Locationally In the spirit in Christ
Ephesians 2:6-7
6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus,7 in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.
This is one that many Christians struggle with because the enemy of our souls wants us to get caught up in this earthly realm fighting daily battles, and people, without us taking up our position in the heavenly realm and seeing our lives from God’s perspective. Imagine how different your life would be and how differently you would respond to what is happening around you if you were able to view life from up above looking down. You could see all the connecting pieces to what you are struggling with now, you could see how it started and how it will end, you could see your way out of that situation, you would be able to see the true enemy and you wouldn’t worry so much because you would see that there is a bigger picture and what you are living now is temporary.
What is available to you in this Location
Ephesians 1:3-5
3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. 4 For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—
Every spiritual blessing that you need is available to you in Christ.
Galatians 3:14
“He redeemed us in order that the blessing promised to Abraham would come to the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.”
The promises that were made to Abraham also belong to you. Yes! You access those promises when you received Christ as your Savior and received the Holy Spirit. It is in the spirit that you became a son or daughter of the Most High God.
That’s how you got your identity
John 1:12
Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God
All you have to do is receive Jesus to have access to being a child of God. AND, I want to add this part to it because it is important…and can be a bit controversial for some.
