Caterpillar often represents a process and change. Before a caterpillar can be become a butterfly it has to go through a very uncomfortable process that includes a shedding. A metamorphosis.

I wonder if this is what’s going on with your mom? There’s a shedding of an old lifestyle, an old mindset and she’s going thru this process of being restored and transformed. She doesn’t want to come out of the process too early because she will be deformed. She needs to go through all of the process, no matter how uncomfortable it may be. Transition is uncomfortable but the end result is a new creature, a beautiful butterfly with its own unique look!
