I’m glad you asked J. Let’s say that you did clear the relationship with God and He had already confirmed to you that this is the person you’ll marry, this does not mean it will be a stress free, worry free, walk to the altar. When things pop up that make you question whether or not you heard from God, you won’t back away because you already know what God said. Hence, you won’t be confused and approach the relationship “hot and cold” because you know what God said. However, if you didn’t clear it with God from the very beginning and you start having feelings for that person, it will be VERY difficult for you to know if it is God’s will or not. Your desires can completely cloud what God is saying. You could want what you want so badly that even if God repeatedly said NO you won’t hear it. So what do you do if you’re not sure? You need to take that relationship leave it at the foot of the cross and walk away. Tell the Lord if this is the person you have for me you will need to make it happen because I am confused. That means you would need to disconnect and disengage from that person. Stop the fantasy novel of your future together that happens in your mind. Take all thoughts captive and move on. Only after you’ve completely disengaged will you ever truly hear God. This is extremely difficult if someone is already over a year or two invested. But here’s why it needs to be done… If it’s not God this is what is going on (1) Witchcraft. Rebellion is as a the sin of witchcraft. Continuing to entertain a relationship in your mind and praying that someone will be your wife/husband when they are not is witchcraft. Just imagine if someone you were not interested in started praying over you. Not Good. (2) Generally if there is one eligible person several people are praying over that person, can you imagine the warfare that’s going on in that person’s mind? (3) Think of the time you would be wasting wanting to be with someone for 3 years and then they marry someone else? (4) It will mess with your personal relationship with the Lord (5) It turns into idolatry at some point because you’ve put your desires and this person above God. I feel like I need to write something for singles and dating because I’ve just seen this happen too many times and I find if the relationship gets cleared immediately, when you think they might be a potential spouse, these issues don’t exist. If God said NO, He said NO and most Christians can walk away in the beginning. Hope this helps to clarify it.

Hi J, your way of dealing with this is exactly what this post is about – hot and cold. You can’t say “thank you Jesus I claim it for myself” and then rebuke it in the next breath. These are opposite reactions to the same issue. You need to pick a side and stick with it. At the bottom of the post all of the steps are there on how you gain clarity. Follow each one and you will be able to see what God’s will is for you in this.
